Lao Tzu was a Chinese philosopher/sage, born in 571 BCE, credited with founding Taoism. He is best known as the author of Tao Te Ching (“The Way of Virtue”) which is one of five books I would bring with me to a desert island.

The name by which he is known is not a personal name but an honorific title meaning “Old Man” or “Old Master.” Based on the depth, essence, and wisdom embedded in the following quotes of his, I’m going with “Old Master.”

“Just remain in the center, watching. And then forget you are there.”

“To the mind that is still, the whole universe surrenders.”

“Tao abides in non-action, yet nothing is left undone.”

“Be content with what you have. Rejoice in the way things are. When you realize there is nothing lacking, the whole world belongs to you.”

“When two great forces oppose each other, the victory will go to the one that knows how to yield.”

“Let it be still and it will gradually become clear.”
