Leonard Cohen once said “there’s a crack in everything, that’s how the light gets in.”

These days it sure seems as if that crack is getting wider. Wars, floods, fires, political upheaval, climate change, and many other challenging phenomena are clearly on the rise.

Many people, in response to this widening crack, are losing heart.

A wave of intense emotions may take any of us over at any time: hopelessness, despair, depression, anger, and sadness being just a few of them. Hey, we are all human beings! We all have the capacity to feel deeply. It comes with the territory of being alive.

And while these sometimes overwhelming emotions are all natural responses to challenging times, they are not the only responses we are capable of.
